Mental Health Problems Amongst High School Students and Factors Associated with It

Case – What Is The Factors of Mental Health Problems amongst High School Students in Malaysia?

Youth usually tend to have emotional and behavioural change from day to day. The problems they face with people around them can be the catalyst for mental health problems such as stress, anxiety and depression. The objectives of the project were to determine the risk of health-related behaviours amongst high school students in Malaysia. The relationship between the health-related behaviours then being analysed to determine which behaviours can affect the mental healthiness of high school students in Malaysia. 

Descriptive Analysis 

The result shown that 82.8% of the Malaysia high school students, or around 19685 students never been bullied even once in the past 30 days. 10.7% were bullied 1 or 2 days, 2.9% were bullied 3 to 5 days, 1.3% were bullied 6 to 9 days, 0.9% were bullied 10 to 19 days, 0.4% were bullied 20 to 29 days and 1.1% were bullied everyday in the past 30 days.The total percentage of high school students that were bullied at least once in the past 30 days is 17.2% or around 4098 students.

Relationship Analysis 

The relationship between one of the mental health related variable, suicidal intention then being tested with the bullied in the past 30 days variable by using chi square test. The chi-square test tells the difference between expected and observed counts that can be used to measure the relationship of the variables. All the p-value of the variables are less than alpha level which is 0.05 so all the variables from violence act and injury history are associated with the times student felt lonely in the past 12 months.

Data Visualisation

17.23% (4098) of the students reported that they have been bullied in the past 30 days. There are several ways of bullying faced by the students who have been bullied. Most common answer given by the student is some other way, indicating the way they have been bullied is not listed in the survey. The others are made fun of about body (775), made fun about sex (662), kicked, pushed or shoved (373), made fun of race (338), left out of the activities (155), and made fun of religion (108). Being bullied has been proved as one of the reasons of mental health problems amongst high school students. 13.98% of the students who have been bullied stated that they have suicidal intention.

Video

Data that have been analysed can also being presented by using video. By using a video, storyline can be created to better explain the case study, the objectives and the findings of the project.
